Launch zine #2: Re-imagining Sex(uality)

After a successful first zine edition on Language, we have finally launched the second edition: Re-imagining Sex(uality). On Sunday 4 October 2020, Alexine and Ichmarah went live on Instagram to announce and celebrate the launch. We are thankful for the support we received during the launch as well as the interesting and thought-provoking questions that we are asked by the viewers. In the video we welcome everyone at 2:24 minutes – we had to get ourselves comfortable and wait a bit for more people to tune in.

Why this topic?

During the live stream, we shared a bit about 6 (ISLA)(NDS), explained why we chose the topic about re-imagining sex and sexuality for the second edition, answered questions from viewers, and where people can get the zine ( download online for free, or order a physical copy). We wanted to approach the topic from a sex-positive lens, in which all that comes with sex is normalized such as consent and after-care.

Sex and other dynamics within sex is/are hard to talk about within our community. We included in the zine some content and trigger warnings because we need to find a way to speak about these things and still take care of ourselves not to be completely exposed to trauma. In the zine, you can find poetry, short stories, illustrations, and collages. Looking back at the submissions and the content, we also realized that there is still space needed for processing sex and sexuality. We hope that we as ABCSSS communities keep talking about these topics and to decolonize sex.

Questions asked

During the live, viewers were encouraged to engage in the conversations. Some viewers also had thought-provoking questions

• What do you think about fluidity and sexuality? Does it make it labels superfluous and do you think being fluid makes it harder to talk about queerness within our Caribbean context?

• Do you have a sexual hero from one of the islands (a feminist, a queer activist, a writer, or anyone else)?
