Zines (pronounced 'zeens'; you can think of the word as being short for magazines) are self-published works. Characterized by a do-it-yourself, cut-and-paste aesthetic, zines are used by individuals and communities to share and archive their stories on their own terms.

During this academic retreat, we will use zine-ing as a critical reflection practice. By making a zine together, we will reflect on the societal impact of sustainability research in the Caribbean. We will share frustrations on how research impact is currently pursued in the Caribbean, as well as hopes for how it can be done otherwise.

No, the retreat is open to application from anyone who is currently involved in sustainability research in the Caribbean (either because they conduct research themselves, or as a student, research participant, research assistant, research advisor, user of research results, science communicator, etc.), or who hopes to become involved in sustainability research in the future.

No, the retreat is open to application from anyone who currently is or hopes to become involved in sustainability research in the Wider (i.e., insular and continental) Caribbean, not only the SSSABC islands.

While our preference is for participants to stay at the retreat location, it can also be an option for you to arrange your own accommodation and daily travel to the retreat location, for example if you are living on Curaçao and have care responsibilities.

The retreat (8 spots; including stay, food, drinks, and participation in retreat activities) is free of charge. If needed, we also have funding available to help cover additional costs related to your participation in the retreat, such as travel and child care. You can indicate whether you require financial assistance in the application form.
