For our second 6 ISLANDS Screens event we will watch the documentary "Sombra di Koló / The Shadow of Color" by Angela Roe, writer and filmmaker of Curaçaoan, Surinamese and Dutch descent. Roe traveled across the island to ask thirty Curaçaoans of all ages and all walks of life to share what “race” and “skin color” mean to them today.

According to Roe, documentary is an example of a tool that raises awareness. The documentary addresses race and racial inequality in contemporary Curaçao. Roe made available the findings of her dissertation research to a large (inter)national audience. You can read the dissertation here: https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=3767&context=etd

The virtual event will start with a screening of the documentary "Sombra di Koló / The Shadow of Color" and will be followed by an interactive discussion about racism, colorism, and decolonization.

We often talk about the word “decolonization”, but what does it mean and why is it important to us from ABCSSS communities? This year we are exploring this question under the theme: “Practices of Decolonization in Caribbean communities”. We will be watching different documentaries and talking through our own ideas and practices of decolonization.
